I get asked all the time “How do you find all the events you attend?” The answer is: websites like Winter City and Explore Edmonton, Facebook events and word of mouth. I also have gone to most of them before, so I know approximately when they will be happening again.
Here’s a quick look at the events I will be attending this January:
1. Ice Castles
The whole month of January
The Ice Castle in Hawrelak Park has become my most favourite winter photo opportunity! Last year was the first year they were here and they sold out every day and I can’t see it slowing down this year. Our Winter City, Edmonton, is the only Canadian city that they build in …. pretty awesome, right?! Be sure to buy your tickets online today to reserve your spot. It’s definitely worth checking it out! YaY!
2. Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Festival
January 14th & 15th
Okay, I’m not going to lie to you guys, I’ve never actually been to this festival …. I always end up out of the country at this time of year ….. BUT it looks amazing!! If I were in the country for it, I would definitely be going to Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Festival! Maybe you guys need to go, and tell me all about it? 😉
3. Ice On Whyte Festival
January 26th – 29th
Ice On Whyte is another winter staple for me as well. I’ve been each and every year for a very long time. This is actually going to be it’s 14th year! Be sure to get your tickets to this Winter City classic and check out some amazing ice sculptures!
4. Lunar New Year & Chinatown Celebration
The Lunar New Year & Chinatown Celebration is another one I have never attended before …. but I am this year! YaY! This festival will contain dragons, lions and firecrackers …. everything required for a great time! 😉
5. Skating & Skiing
Swing ‘n’ Skate Sundays happen each Sunday in January at City Hall between 1:00PM and 4:00PM. They include entertainment by local bands inside City Hall and skating outside on the plaza.
Servus Free Ski Friday will be happening tomorrow night (the first Friday of the month) 5:00PM to 9:00PM, and is exactly what the name says …. free skiing!
South West Ski Fest is also happening on Saturday, January 28th 11:30AM to 3:30PM at Yellowbird Community Hall. You can try out cross-country skiing and snowshoeing for free and enjoy some free snacks as well …. chili and hot chocolate! YUMM! I might have to go to this in the morning and then head off to the Lunar New Year Celebration in Chinatown after. 😉
So, as you can see, there’s plenty to do in our amazing Winter City! Hope you all have an amazing January!
